I thought the plague plot was well-developed. The sickness and dying aspects were dealt with movingly and believably but I also appreciated the focus on research, which itself was a nice blending of the scientific and the fantastic that worked well in the Emelan universe. I love the bond between Rosethorn and Briar in this book, but I also enjoy the depth of Rosethorn and Crane's relationship where they are rivals willing to work together and who actually have respect for each other despite their disagreements.

Briar Book Circle Of Magic Tamora Pierce 9780590553599 Books Reviews

This by far is my favorite of the four in this series. I love Briar and his world of plants and his relationship with the others who live in Discipline Cottage. What a great series.
For a book aimed at kids this book deals with some heavy themes. Chief among those is death tempered by love. The juxtaposition of the two character's situations--Flick and Rosethorn-- gives subliminal pause and impresses the value of life on the reader. One cannot help but learn as they enjoy the adventure of this story. I'll leave it to you to decide what.
This 4 books series is one of my favorite reads. It is in juvenile section of our library but us elders like it too.
Briar's Book is the fourth and final book in the Circle of Magic series by Tamora Pierce.

Briar and his teacher, Rosethorn, go into the city for some work with a poor hospital and stumble onto an epidemic. The Blue Pox is a new, never before seen disease sweeping Emelan and must be stopped. But our favorite four mages have never been in the middle of an epidemic before. They all must learn new magics and new ways of dealing with the horrors if they're to survive and end this plague.

This book really lets us in on the character of each of our four mages, but especially Briar. All of them are stubborn and refuse to accept defeat, even when they must face Death itself. They refuse to stop fighting, even at the risk of their own lives. They refuse to give up on each other.
This was the last book I needed to complete my collection. I now own every single one of Tamora Pierce's published works. She is an absolute genius, as well as my favorite author. She touches on difficult subjects in ways that make it easier for children of all ages to understand. I absolutely adore how she brings the characters to life by making them human. They may be magical and in an entirely different multiverse but they are still people with the same thoughts, emotions, and reactions of anyone who reads them. I cannot truly express how much I adore her books.

PS. This is the 4th book in the Circle of Magic quartet. I strongly suggest you start with Sandry's book and work your way through. When I first picked this title up in the library, I was very very confused. )
This was a wonderful end to the Circle of Magic series. My emotions were tugged evenmore than in the first three books. I liked the gradual changes in Briar as he had to grow and mature during the blue pox epidemic. This is a series best read in order... and I am glad there is another series to start, to learn more about these four friends and their exciting and steadfast lives.
Wow--what an engaging and thrilling conclusion to this quarted! I'm usually at least partially saddened when I'm reading the end of a quartet, but in this case, I am basking in the warm knowledge that there are more books in the series.
As is the usual case with these books, there is a slightly larger role for the title figure in this case, the sole male member of this group of young mages. Briar had been orphaned at an early age, growing up in the rugged streets and grungy under ground sewers, making his was through thievery and pick-pocketing. Saved from a life of prisoner dock work as a triply convicted felon, Nicolas Goldeneye turns up and transports him to the Winding Circle temple complex to be taught how to use his magic. This novel takes place almost a year after his arrival and his introduction to his new "mates" Tris who has weather magic, Sandry who uses weaving to control and use her magic, and Daja--a powerful fire mage and smith. Now Sumersea is threatened by a new and wickedly powerful plague, and the mages and their mentors must try to understand and fight the illness which is decimating the city and temple. When the plague strikes Briar's mentor, Rosethorn, he and his friends take terrible risks to try to save her.
Wonderfully written, splendid, complex characters and a well developed world! Read and enjoy.
