I know I’ve said this before, but I absolutely love the stories Siri Mitchell tackles. She doesn’t shy away from any challenge, whether it’s the era the story is set, the topic, the events or the characters. With Love Comes Calling, Mitchell continues this trend in a fun read, which also happens to be set during the intriguing Roaring 20s.The story keeps you hooked, I found myself chuckling at the mischief Ellie found herself in and Mitchell was able to help you sympathize with her, especially since she didn’t fully understand why she found herself forgetting things or her focus. We also see a glimpse of what is was like for women during that era. We’ve come a long way friends, a long way. I thought the details, happenings and tragic consequences of the Prohibition era were portrayed in an accurate way. It’s not easy stuff to take in, but it’s what happened.
I have to say one of my favorite characters was Griff. He’s a constant and stable character throughout the story and his love for Ellie was sweet and true.
I also really enjoyed reading Siri’s Author’s notes. She took on what someone with ADHD would have lived through and how society would have handled it. No easy task, but I thought it very well done. Plus such an interesting discussion on regulating morality (in terms of Prohibition) and the real stories of the people in this novel and Prohibition effects (one glaring stat? There were more alcoholics after Prohibition ended than before). So interesting!
Is there a specific event in history you’re always drawn to read about?

Here's another Siri Mitchell book I love as much as "She Walks In Beauty"! I enjoyed the other books in her Against All Expectations series, but this one brings more of the humor and the depth of character that she writes so well. I laughed out loud at one point! The main character is flawed, and because of that, is totally relatable. I enjoyed her journey into discovering, not only herself, but the world around her.
What I also like is that in this book, similar to "She Walks In Beauty", the author brings the social problems of the era to light in a timeless, relevant way. I'm interested in the story because its new, and refreshing, and still manages to have a twist at the end. And what a twist! Haha! I won't give anything away, but will say that this is one book that will be on my "read often list."
I did enjoy this novel. However, the heroine while likable (and I did like her), was at the sametime one who drove me crazy. Mitchell admits at the end of the book she was wanting to write an ADHD character set in a different time period and play out how they would be viewed and such. And while I do think she did handle this well. The charcter was a little too ADHD on steroids for me. Still the plot was well written and had me speed through it in several sittings, in one day! So for those of you who are Mitchell fans you will want to read this... just wanting you to be prepared for the heroine.
A unique story, from a one-of-a-kind heroine. I laughed out loud, I clenched my jaw, and I smiled my way through this story. At first I thought it was a bit chaotic to be in the mind of the heroine (who the author has said would be classified as having ADHD), but eventually I fell in love with Ellis and found myself cheering her on as she solved a very serious problem. The secondary characters were colorful and the era came to life. Overall, this was a wonderful story.
Love Comes Calling-
Born into one of Boson's First Families, Ellis Eton has high expectations placed upon her shoulders. Ellis has difficulty meeting those expectations and she considers herself a 'dumb Dora'. It seems no matter her intentions every attempt to succeed ends with the refrain 'Oh, Ellis!' She dreams of running away to Hollywood and becoming an actress. Ellis believes that the only time she can do well is when she is pretending to be someone else.
She is asked to take the place of her friend Janie as a telephone operator, while Janie attends her mother's funeral. Janie and Ellis look so much like twins family members can be fooled. Ellis can't let her parents know she is posing as a working girl. So she pretends to be Janie.
On her first day as a telephone operator, Ellis accidently overhears a conversation in which two men discuss harming her next door neighbor and friend Griffin.
Using her knowledge of movies plots, Ellis decides to become a sleuth and solve the mystery of who is threatening Griff. The madcap investigation has begun. Reminiscent of old Hollywood movies, Ellis moves between the worlds of prohibition era speakeasys, Boston's Beacon Hill and the 1920's workplace in order to solve the mystery and save her beau.
Ellis is a very different type if heroine. Insecure, with undiagnosed attention deficit she finds herself failing as a student at Radcliffe. I believe her lack of self esteem will resonate with readers. She wants to please her parents who expect her to fill a traditional role, but can't make herself fit the mold. She doesn't believe she will be loved if she is herself.
The storyline is both humorous as we follow Ellis's adventures, and serious as she and her friends deal with issues of drinking, out of wedlock pregnancy and the graft and corruption of public officials during prohibition. Griffin is a football star with a future in politics. Although he easily fits into his role in society, he is the only one who loves Ellis just as she is.
Love Comes Calling by Siri Mitchell is an accurate look at life in the 'Roaring 20's'. At the same time, the book includes issues that readers can relate to in today's society. Ellis is a sweet girl and you will want her to find her happily ever after.
