This story is set in southern Utah and focuses on two boys and their journey together to figure out themes such as loyalty, family, friends and ultimately their future.There is so much to love about this book. The setting is interesting and different enough to keep our attention but there are enough familiar details in the relationships to make us feel right at home. The small town feel is so well-drawn, it's easy to feel like you're welcome for an extended visit. Even when the group of kids go to L.A., we get a real sense of place and setting.
Okerlund does a great job at feeding us motivation and emotion through the main characters, Merrill and Robbie. It is so easy to love them and sympathize with them. For me, it was especially compelling to read and connect with the music part of the story. So much can be portrayed and expressed through music, joy, enthusiasm, sorrow. It's all there and nicely done.
There's not a lot to critique about this story. I felt like it jumped around just a bit to show the passage of time and it left me a little disjointed at times. From a mother's perspective, I like that she didn't ease up on the vocabulary. That's always nice. I also appreciate that there are strong, female characters in Merrill's mom and grandma. The relationships weren't perfect and I appreciated that it provided an avenue to acknowledge that sometimes family relationships are hard and that they take work and compromise. Even Robbie, though we don't know very much about his mother, we know she supported and loved him and tried to protect him.
Loyalty is a key theme in the story, between both family and friends. The story is set up perfectly for this theme to be explored and expressed at just the right time in the narrative. I really enjoyed this story and feel like I made some new friends. I'm excited to let my middle-graders read this story and talk about it with them. This is a great recommended read or all ages.

I give any clean book an automatic 5 stars and then subtract for other things. I did not like the writing style. ...not the way I enjoy reading novels. I would give it a one star based on style alone but the story line was okay so I gave it 3 stars. I probably won't read any more books by this author because of the style.
Okerlund weaved together an intriguing story with unique characters that kept me interested throughout the book. I enjoyed the flow of the story and look forward to reading more from this author.
This book took me by surprise. I loved it! It was a fairly quick read and the story kept me intrigued. I could picture Hurricane and all the locations mentioned throughout the story. It is a good wholesome book definitely worth your time to read!
I really enjoyed this book because it was original. It was like it could really have happened instead of fiction. This is a story involving mormons with mormon terms, but was about real people from a real small town. I enjoyed the twists and turns of the storyline. Good reading.
I thought Merrill was well-written, and I enjoyed the dialogue. Especially all the lines about being an agent! This was a quick, light read, but touches on potential cultural nerves in a respectful way that doesn't really lean to either side -- it just seemed like the author was relating objective facts about southern Utah and the culture in general.
The relationships were solid and believable. I enjoyed it but the ending could have come together a little more cohesively. The bit with Merrill's dad seemed to not be as thought out as the rest of the book. Despite the nitpicks I've mentioned, it was a fun story -- one I didn't put down once I had started!
I enjoyed Hurricane Coltrane a great deal. I appreciated Ms. Okerlund's sensitive portrayal of the developing relationships among the principal characters, and in particular the growing pains experience by Merrill, a maturing but not mature male high school genius/nerd who can't seem to find a good fit in either square holes or round holes. The music theme was well done and interesting -- I played a trombone in high school and could identify with everything except the talent. I also liked that the polyg subculture, essential to the plot, wasn't sensationalized as it might have been. Bad people are bad people no matter where they are found. Ms. Okerlund's descriptions were vivid and effective -- I could feel the heat and smell the dust as I read, and her book was (in a way) an introduction to a part of the country that most of us haven't experienced and might like. The plot twist involving Merrill's father was a bit unlikely but explained a lot that was mysterious about Merrill's mom, an admirable character with believable flaws. Highly recommended, and I'd like to read Ms. Okerlund's next book.
