I sure wish Amazon would allow half-stars; I'd give this 4.5 stars if I could. It's a good story, far above average for military sci-fi but will it become a classic? Well, I don't know but if I had to guess I'd say no. Must read for the genre? I'd say maybe, although it's quite unfair of me to be judging this book in 2017 when it was written almost 2 decades ago (copyright 2000). Technologically, its got cellphone AI assistants, superpowered combat "suits" (with antigrav, antimomentum, medical treatment, & self-repair), rail-guns, lasers, (maybe some other kind of "blaster", I'm not sure), antimatter bombs, kinetic missiles, but nothing original as far as I can see. As typical for Ringo, the story starts in a 0-to-60 sprint, and has an enormous number of incompetent "top-brass" with only a few competent leaders. And the key decisions are either made by some remote possibly idiotic, possibly corrupt "politician" or by someone local. He doesn't seem to understand how most decisions typically evolve. There are two main story lines, one about a covert insertion onto a conquered planet which is inadequately described episodically, and the primary story line about the deployment of the battle suits. (Implausibly, they're designed on Earth in just a couple of months). But that all said, and accepting that people are all gullible idiots, especially those in charge of our nation's security, then its a good read. I'm hoping that the last 3 books in the series will expose the alien menace (which is mostly alluded to here) and adequate counter-measures adopted, but their synopseses (synopsii?) don't seem to indicate that...Tags : A Hymn Before Battle (Posleen War Series #1) [John Ringo] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. A Hymn Before Battle Posleen War Series #1 John Ringo 9780671319410 Books Reviews
John Ringo can write military science fiction as well as David Weber. He always honors the individual's potential to effect far-reaching ethical change, unlike G. T. Almasi's (Blades of Winter) celebration of violence as acceptable in and of itself. Ringo always carefully introduces the "evil" components of his stories and then uses his compelling sense of right vs wrong to impel his characters to do all they can and/or can inspire or enable in others to circumvent and then destroy those who foster, hide from, enable by inaction or stupidity, or actually accept evil. I am currently rereading this series with great pleasure. I have to admit that some of my favorite parts of these books are the introductory selections from Rudyard Kipling's poetry --- always strongly applicable and ironic.
I have the paper book here somewhere... read the first four and just could not stop. Was kinda bummed the fourth book took a while to come out since it was the culmination of the series, or so I thought.
Turns out the series continues with a different characters but it was not yet available. (
That was four or five years ago, probably 100 books easy in between but I would think of this series occasionally. Looked it up and am digital now so will definitely be buying the whole series again, including the newest additions.
This was my second space opera series, first one petered out after 3 books and was just boring boring filler with no content. Never even finished it... by this one- from the start, it is obvious of the actual experience perspectives and tone of the story, it isn't just another tale. I tell everyone I talk to of some part of the book or something that had me laughing from the mental imagery just laid out in spectacular fashion (if I can without being boorish).
For fans of true to life military science fiction, having read many others, this has to be my favorite. The believability of the story, the accuracy of the characters to what I remember and expect from persons in these scenarios... No ridiculous excessive drama that doesn't happen, no out of the blue special save the day surprises just to rescue the damsel in distress, just a real story about some real stuff that never happened. Probably.
todr great space opera. real to life military action. 10/10 am reading again
I'm not going to write a long winded review here. No point. Others have already done so. I gave this book 5 stars, simply because it deserves it. It has everything a great military sci fi story should have, and then some more. LOTS more. I've read all the books in this series to date, and if you don't like this story, you're not human.
When you're done with the books in this series, I highly recommend John Ringo's other works. They're every bit as good, if not better, and they are all different. You'll find something you like, I guarantee it.
Edit. One thing I should mention. Once you get rolling, Mr. Ringo's real life military experience really shows. I have no doubt many of his characters are modeled after actual people. The thought make me both Proud, and more than a little afraid at the same time, current world realities being what they are. I can only hope that the ones that make us proud outrank the ones that we should all fear.
