These "best of" collections are published every year but each year a different person gets to pick the stories that are included. The 2010 collection is definitely not one of my favorites. I thought most of these stories were pretty bad - boring - and trying too hard to be "art." It will be a good addition to every college and high school library, but I hope the next couple of years' collections are an improvement.

I did not purchase this book so I cannot comment - but I like Lee Child Jack Reacher is a mans man.
If you enjoy mysteries, this is the way to find short stories, rather than lengthy books. Sometimes you feel like a short story, sometimes you don't.
I figured with Lee Child editing it, it had to be a winner. W R O N G ! I've read six stories thus far,and with one exception they all fall into the area of literary fiction. Genre stories should deliver a strong strong plot and highly appropriate characters. Both, for the most part, were absent. Mystery writers at their absolute best are story tellers. Sorry Lee, I love your work but you very much missed the boat with your editing.
always enjoy anthologies for discovering new to me authors & for quick reads....this one delivered with great stories......& enjoy learning about the authors, also
A mixed bag. Not all the selections were stellar, which is not surprising. But then tastes are also different. You may like the ones I did, or just the opposite.
I've been reading this series every year since it began in the late '90's. Each year the stories published are chosen by a different guest editor, who is also a mystery short story writer. Obviously, some years are better than others. The 2009 anthology was probably the worst bunch of stories I've ever read and, believe me, I read a LOT of mystery/crime short stories. I was hesitant to purchase this year's anthology, but I did and I am very glad that I bought it. This collection has to be one of the best set of stories I've read in a very long time. I definitely recommend this book for fans of the genre.
If you enjoy looking at authors you have never tried before and don't want to commit to an entire novel, this collection of 20 short Mystery's is a wonderful way to dip into the works of writers you haven't yet read.

Although this collections contains some very solid, if not excellent, stories I did not think this was an overall strong collection of short story suspense fiction. I will note, however, that different readers have different tastes and as such others may feel differently. I own 8 volumes of The Best American Mystery stories and think some of the other years provided stronger collection of stories.
