I found this intriguing, mostly interesting, (don't usually read gay stuff) and yet while it had greatpotential for going better -- just cannot "buy" or understand characters/people with a "who's next" mentality,
nor could I accept the basic "no growth" of character in the main guy. He's vastly of interest, but comes
off as exceptionally shallow, emotionally unfilled (and is most likely to remain that way forever: nobody home).
Christian, as a character, was somewhat much more interesting; but gets dumped at the end,
and leaves one feeling sad, or short-changed. (Though his story sort of got dragged out to death in the process.
And abruptly curtailed.) Absolutely loved Hunter initially, but he later fizzes off into never-neverland as a person; again, sad.
I just can't get into/understand people who give you an all-out emotional blast, and you can really care
for them and their enthusiasm -- yet they turn out to be some kind of freaks, who just can't seem to
come to terms with life and living. Instead, they can't be happy unless they're on some weird nonsense
trip of having to try to live out some fantasy or silly fetish, that leaves nothing of true value or sense to
deal with. These guys are warped, and will never truly "live."
Coach's so-called "friends" were also shallow nightmares, and very much not wanting to be called
nor even "valued" as friends, in my opinion. A poor collection of warped humanity. Sad, because they had some
really beautiful things going for some of them, at different times, (and with wild sex, indeed); but in the end
are as character-empty as a used water can full of gaping holes.

Muscle Bound A Novel by David Marlow
Not since Jack Fritcher penned the hot muscle-sex between Ryan and Kick in "Some Dance to Remember" has muscle-sex reappeared in all its glory as in "Muscle Bound" by David Marlow. It's as if the author hoists a 45 pounder, dashes it to the gym floor, and shouts "I'm in" to the world of muscle obsession, hot n sweaty muscle sex, and muscle worship as it it known by gay men who work out. And what a welcome addition this novel is! David Marlow is the acclaimed author of a half dozen or so other novels, but this is his first entry focused on the gay community.
Chase Hyde, aka Coach, is a very real and lovable character totally dedicated to body-building who holds his feelings close to this massive pecs as he wends his way through the mysteries of relationships, but mostly avoiding them as a self-described "romosexual." Then one day Hunter Rowe enters the picture and breaks through his defenses, but not without persistence and deception. An extended back story appears in the third section of the book that details a relationship with one Christian Falconer, a relationship that struggles for survival. [...] exacts sweet revenge later in this page-turner of a novel. Hated to see it end! Sequel! Sequel! Sequel!
This was a fun, fast paced story that takes you into the world of muscle training and muscle fantasy. The story does try to cover some of the complex issues of performance enhancing and party drugs, sexuality, marriage and religion/spirituality but it does not spend significant time on them. Detail is given to the grueling workouts, the planning and preparation needed to induce muscle growth and the discipline and desire required to achieve what so many try but fail to achieve...a pumped "jacked" physique. If you are a bodybuilder or strength athlete of any kind or have an interest in those sports you will enjoy and relate to the characters and themes in this book, in fact....it may describe you and your gym friends experiences perfectly. I read this on my Google Nexus 7 using the app, not in paperback as stated above. Enjoy !
When I received the book, I thought it was essays regarding bodybuilding, muscle worship, why we do it or some kind of reasoning to be a bodybuilder, the strive for perfection through steroids and muscle worshipping among gay bodybuilders. In any case, it is a novel that uses these elements to develop the story and view of gays, bodybuilding, our lust for muscle sex and the things we do to be perfect and the need of other bodybuilders as sex partners and companions.
The problem that I noticed, being myself in my late forties, gay, an extreme dedicated bodybuilder, steroid user (both at really high levels) and being muscle worshipper and worshipped, and last but not least with a great day job, that the novel is full of stereotypes and misconceptions. The author did not do a thorough research about the subject of steroids and their consequences. Did he interview bodybuilders and their cycles? it seems so, but superficially. One example Decadurabolin retains water; therefore it is not used for cutting. Before competition you reduce your doses, especially AS that retains water. You don't shave or apply color the same day of the competition (you do it a few days before gradually), and other little details. A common stereotype is that bodybuilders, gay or not, are dumb and only want to work out, eat and sleep all day. And, that they need some "sponsor" or be rich to get into the game. Just check successful professional bodybuilders that when they became professionals still kept a day job, or were trainers. What I mean is that we are no all looking for a sugar daddy to pay for our steroids when we start. Another issue is that seems that the intelligent bodybuilders don't use steroids (like Chase himself) because they are smart enough to know the consequences. Other details that are irrelevant like timing of accessories or what we used to use in the seventies or eighties (although the author is not too clear about years).
In summary is an exciting book but for the gay/bodybuilder/steroid user/mutual worshipping guy who lives in that environment is a bad description and narrative of what is really going on. It will give the bad impression for casual gay bodybuilders or just muscle worshippers (I mean a non bodybuilder worshipping a bodybuilder).
